GRAIN ROT Beginner Guide: Survive Your First Run
A source-labelled first-run plan from the Outpost to the elevator and back.

In this field note
GRAIN ROT is a horror co-op extraction builder, not a conventional mission shooter. Steam describes each player as a living spark inside a fragile wooden vessel. Your squad rides a cursed elevator into shifting ruins, breaks or carries furniture, processes loot, and tries to return before every vessel is destroyed. If the whole group loses its bodies, the haul is lost. The safest first-run objective is therefore not “clear the floor”; it is “learn the loop and bring something home.”
Prepare at the Outpost
Walk through the Outpost before pressing the elevator control. The official description says recovered resources feed the rebuilding layer, while the launch-week beginner walkthrough shows scrap, gold and artifact currency serving different jobs. Spend only what you understand. Keep simple tools available, learn where the grinder and storage are, and open the invite control before the group starts moving. A new squad loses more runs to confusion than to low damage.
Player-observed advice from the dated tutorial is to bring basic mallets because they are readily available and useful for constructs. That is a launch-week tactic, not an official permanent loadout rule. Balance, prices and tool access may change.
Read the elevator before opening the door
The control panel rolls modifiers for the next floor. Take five seconds to read them. A useful modifier such as Surveyed or Gold Rush changes what is worth carrying. A danger modifier such as Power Outage, Hazard Zone, Lights Out or Rot Bloom changes the order in which the team should move. Do not confuse Lights Out with Power Outage: the observed modifier guide says Lights Out stays dark, while Power Outage requires finding a missing fuse to restore the return elevator.
Secure the exit, then salvage
If a fuse is missing, make it the first search objective. The modifier guide mentions lockers and toolboxes; the solo tutorial separately shows boxes and lockers. Both then return the fuse to the elevator panel. Editorial coordination suggestion: one player should keep the return route in mind while the others search nearby rooms. This role assignment is not directly demonstrated by the retained videos. Once the exit works, process easy valuables before carrying bulky furniture far from safety.
Steam’s official loop supports two choices: smash furniture for resources or feed it into a grinder for coins. Which choice is better depends on the modifier and what the Outpost currently needs. Do not copy a fixed “best” route from another run; the ruins shift.
Know when the run is already successful
A small extraction teaches more than a large wipe. Keep enough stamina to break contact, listen for enemy audio, and call out hazards before someone commits to a corridor. When a vessel breaks, the spark mechanic may still allow recovery through another body, but that is not permission to scatter. Return once the group has useful loot, a weak player is out of resources, or a high-threat modifier is consuming the safety margin.
Evidence status: the extraction loop and spark/vessel premise are Steam-confirmed. Loadout order and fuse priority are player-observed, dated August 10, 2026, and version-sensitive; the return-route assignment is editorial guidance.
